| Are You Ready? Monday, April 13, 2009 (324 reads)
Hello Spartans, We are quickly moving through the month of April and our fifth six weeks ends tomorrow (Tuesday, April 14th). As we enter the final six weeks of the school year, there are many things to consider. The last six weeks of a semester is always short, due to the reveiw and exam period at the end of the marking period. Due to this factor, each grade seems to carry more weight and be more important. Students need to be dilligent and take every assignment seriously, as a low grade can be magnified given these circumstances. Please encourage your student to keep up and be dilligent regarding deadlines and due dates. Our counselors are in their final phase regarding schedules for next year's classes. They will be calling in students who have not yet completed a schedule for next year and getting this information into our data base. Typically, students would rather select their classes than have us do it, so encourage them to see their counselor and get this important task completed. | Welcome back! Monday, March 23, 2009 (578 reads)
Hello Spartans, As we complete another week, there have been some excellent accomplishments occur recently. Last night, we had our SHS curriculum night. This evening of highlighting programs and possibilities, both at the district and campus level was a huge success. Many hours of planning and prep work go on behind the scenes and a large group of SHS staff pitched in to make the night a success. Assistant Principal Margret Norton and Post Secondary Counselor Michael Strait were two of the main factors for the success of the evening. We had representatives from each of our core areas, as well as electives and special programs here at SHS, as well as representatives from the Guthrie Center. We also had a series of focus groups with speakers ranging in topics from PreAP and AP courses, to HCC and Dual Credit Courses. The feedback I received thoughout the night was that the parents really appreciated the wealth of information available and they were very glad that SHS had made the effort to put this evening on. It was a total team effort and I hope that if you attended, you now have a clearer picture of the wide range of possibilities open to each of your students. | Happy Spring Break! Friday, March 13, 2009 (353 reads)
Spartan Community, Well, we made it! Spring Break is finally here. I know that staff and students alike are ready for some time off to get some rest and sleep in. I am sure there may even be some parents that will be happy to slow down from the routine and relax. Mother nature threw us a curve this week and, although the weathermen said Thursday was not going to be as bad as previously predicted - they were wrong and it poured on Thursday afternoon. This meant re-scheduling of our powder puff girls football game. As soon as the make up date is selected, we will publicize the date. We also made the decision to assist our students with their ticket. Our last period teacher had the student write the students name on the back of the ticket and then turn it in for safe keeping. Given that we are about to have a week off from school, there is no telling where those tickets might have ended up. On the day we return, Monday, March 23rd a large number of our 9th through 11th grade students will be completing the "Fitness Gram" in the morning. This is a State mandated physical test to judge the state of health of students across Texas. Our 12th grade students completed it earlier in the year on a late arrival day. Students who participate in athletics, have health or PE, or students in the Fine Arts should have completed it with their coach or sponsor, so our numbers will be manageable. If you have a female student, this would be a day for them not to wear a dress or skirt to school. Please click Read More to view the rest of my message.

| Principal's Message Thursday, March 05, 2009 (362 reads)
Hello Spartans, This is a call to action. We publicized the window to sign up for the Stratford CIT (Campus Improvement Team), and that window has closed. The problem is that we received only one parent application to serve on the committee and we really need two more. The CIT plays a vital role in assisting campus leadership in making important decisions. It also serves as a great conduit between the community and the campus to share concerns and also give feedback on what is going well. The time committment is 1 meeting per month that lasts for 1 1/2 hours. I would like to ask for some volunteers to serve on this team. If you are interested, just send me an e-mail with your contact information. I will take applications until next Wednesday, March 11, 2009. On Thursday, we will conduct a lottery drawing for representatives. I will then contact you after spring break to thank you for volunteering and let all applicants know whether their name was drawn or not. Pleas click on Read More to view the rest of my message.

Hello Spartans, Well, it is here. On Tuesday of this week we give the first part of our TAKS test for the spring semester. I often say that we do not teach to the test. We teach the curriculum and then the test shoud take care of itself. That is in terms of content. In format, we give our students an opportunity to practice the format of the test, before they have to complete it for real. Tuesday, they will complete the writing section that we practiced in the fall. Click read more to view the rest of my message.
